Default 'nothing works' problems

okay i havent seen the car, its my girl friends outta time and shes seemingly useless at the moment
its an 87 lx 5.0 auto (just in case any of those have any bearing on the situation)

the generator light is coming on, the engine wont rev above 1000 rpm and the battery isnt charging at all,
it has a new alternator in it as of a few weeks ago when she brought it

would this be caused by a bad connection somewhere in between the battery and the alternator, would the car start and run without the alternator connected or is it deffinatley a shot alternator

thanks

would the bad alternator prevent it from reving

she brought the car on her own before i saw it, has 120,000 miles on it, since we got it we replaced the spark plugs, cap/rotor, wires and coil, and battery
solved the starting issues, and the fact the distrubutor shocking people when you went to touch it, but the car still back fires under WOT when you gun it ( i assume timing but it doesnt happen when she drives it)

if the battery is almost dead.. it'll do a lot of wierd things as the ecm needs 12 volts constant current to properly operate and carry out functions
