Sorry for the delay, my youngest brother is home from the Navy so we hung out for a while and I forgot but good news is I replicated your problem. I disconnected my sending unit and the fuel gauge goes right to the top. Here are the pics the connected is right behind the rear bumper behind the tank, four wires.
