I am having trouble getting the car started, when I turn the key the starter will spin but won't engage the flywheel, I took the starter out and took it to the local autoparts store to have them check the starter and it spins and kicks out like itshould what could be the problem with it? Thanks

RE: 1987 Mustang GT
if the teeth won't grab the flywheel...1 of two things...#1 bad bendix = need new starter......#2 stripped teeth on flywheel in that spot= rotate motor over a little by hand..if it grabs then.....= you know what needs replacing...but you should of seen evidence of that if that were the case when you removed starter....most likely a bad starter bendix

RE: 1987 Mustang GT
well i did get it fixed, i took a new 4 cylinder starter and compared the size dimension and teeth count verified by looking up a starter rebuild kit for the v8 and the 4 cylinder starter and it matched so all i did is changed the nose cone and the starter works like a charm
