Default 8.8 Rear end Qs

1. What is a carrier?
2. Does it contain the gears?
3. Is there a unit that has gears and all in one?

I would like to change the gears my self, but I am not ready for that quite yet, so i figure I could spend a little more and get a complete unit that I could just swap in. Is this possible or do they not make such a thing.

Default RE: 8.8 Rear end Qs

A carrier is the main part of the rear. Some call it the differential. Its where the spider gears are. The ring gear in pressed onto it but the pinion gear is in the axle housing.

If you buy a new differential all the spider gears will be in there but you must install the ring gear. Doing a ring and pinion is not near as hard as most people make it out to be. All it take is a few special tools.
