When you put it in 5th gear does the car jerk? and are you putting in 5th easilly? Normally to check that you gotta get down on the ground and wiggle the drive shaft back and forth and see if there is alot of slop in the joint..the shaft should have some play but the joint shouldnt.

It does jerk a bit but not much and as far as shifting to 5th i always put it in easy and slow and doesnt jerk at all. Tonight i was racing a 94 gt and when i put it in 5th quickly it made the banging like noise fairly loud.

Haha yea those hard shifts get you everytime! i would def. check the joint by seeing if it has any play. I'm thinkin it might be bad because there has to be alot of slack in the drive line for that to do that. does it only happen in 5th?

if you were racing and hit fifth gear then you were going damn fast. if you WERE going this fast then you would KNOW that your U joints are bad because the car will have a NASTY vibration that would be felt through the shifter and the rest of the car. it sounds like a sloppy tranny input shaft like mine

Yea i agree...but you said the noise came from the back of the car so i would check the rear end...but it might be the worn tranny shaft making everything slap around like said above...
