What are you talking about?I've never heard about "priming" the oil filter, besides putting oil on the seal.
Oh lordy...

Priming or pre-filling an oil filter is basic stuff. It's like using brake pads with shims or anti-squeal or knowing to mix anti-freeze 50-50 or 30-70 depending on conditions.

The reason behind doing that is if you put a completely empty oil filter into a car and start it up, there is NO oil or oil pressure in the system until that filter fills up and starts getting oil pushed through it. Since 80% of engine wear over its life occurs at startup when no oil is present, you want to minimize the amount of time oil takes to fill up that new filter and push into your engine. That 1-2 second difference means a lot.
+1 You may not notice the lack of oil pressure, but it's there none-the-less. Though it's a bit hard on SBF's where the filter is at an angle, if you're not careful you can dump oil all over the place.

i fill all the oil filters before i install them on my Diesel and my cars, its just a good habit to do, a large oil filter can absorb alot of oil before its full. this means that there is a small portion of time that the motor isnt getting the normal amount of oil. It's probly not enough time to hurt anything, but filling the filter before hand sure doesnt hurt as well

it just makes the oil filter pass the oil easier with some oil in it without it ur pressuring the oil to fill it up and it kinda messes it up

if your just changing the oil, theres gonna be residue, and oil that hangs on where it is, 1-2 seconds shouldnt hurt anything

seems logical to do when the engine is sitting or brand new, but thats what priming the oil PUMP is for, it pumps the oil through the filter and up into the engine before startup, so, no big deal

I've always put some oil in the filter when doing changes out of habit. I don't know if it's really necessary or how much of a difference that extra second or two without pressure makes, but it doesn't hurt anything if you do "prime" the filter (never heard it called that ) so I do it for piece of mind.

oh please. i don't want to start a big argument, but i know for a fact that my oil pressure gauge goes up to full psi well before 1-2 seconds have gone by after putting on a new filter.

MAN...........look ....on a new engine it's important to prime the oil system as to not cause damage on initial start up but on a car that has a well broken in engine there is enough oil resting on the bearings and all other mechanical /moving parts that fro the brief secong it'll take to fill the filter up...it won't matter..it'll be fine so don't worry about it

This is correct! I just changed my oil yesterday and did not prime the filter. When I started the car the oil pressure went up to forty then dropped to fifteen or so for a second or two and then went back to normal... after seeing that I will prime it from now on and to whomever disagrees, what does it hurt to add a little insurance to protecting the cars we brag about day in and day out on this forum...
