they help dampen rear end hop and stabalizeside to side movement to some degree....I only removed mine due to tire rub issues and installed a panhard bar instead = much better ride now

you can get rid of them if you get a good set of upper and lower control arms. as soon as im ready to put my 8.8 in the quads are coming off and some nice hotchkis box upper and lowers are going in
