RE: installing oil pump
when i did my oil pump i had the same issue, idk how high you have the motor jacked up and what your access is like, but when i did mine i put some heavy grease on the end of the shaft that goes into the distributor and it helped to hold it into place a bit.
it would still slip out but not near as easily, i was able to eventually get it all lined up and bolted down after a few tries GL!

RE: installing oil pump
and also when i installed my pump i was told to prime the pump by putting vasoline inside the pump itself by taking the small plate on the pump off and then just cramming as much vasoline in there as possible with the gear

RE: installing oil pump
Mine didnt blow, my oil pan gasket was leaking horribly so i changed it, figured while in there do a new pump/shaft.
Your pump BLEW??? hope the motors ok, howd the pan look when you took it down?
If your changing the blown pump do the shaft and make sure to get a good gasket to go with it because yes it does blow to do this while the motors in the car [:@]
And yes i replaced all of it with ford racing parts.

RE: installing oil pump
Replace it with a good hardned shaft from Melling or ARP. From underneath you can put the shaft in the pump and then raise it into place and wiggle/turn it till it lines up. It must go in before the pump, and make sure that the metal clip on the top of the shaft sits just under the hole in the block it goes through, it's so when you pull the dizzy it won't pull the shaft out of the oil pump. As far as priming, you don't need vaseline, what you can do with the pickup installed is turn it upside down and pour oil through the pickup so it gets down in the pump to wet the gears. And I'd go ahead and prime the engine when it's all back together, but that's just me.
