Default Temp questions

So I replaced the thermostat thinking it was stuck open because the car isn't getting to temp(according to stock gauge). I replaced it with another 180* thermostat and it not getting as warm as it was before????[:@] If your looking at the gauge it will get to the second white line from the bottom and thats it.

So my questions are: with the temp gauge being off, does that affect it going into open/closed loop? Or is there another temp sensor somewhere that goes to the computer? The reason I ask is because it smells like its running rich(no cats though) and doesn't get the best gas mileage(I was expecting a little more than what it seems to be getting). So I was thinking that since the gauge is off, if the computer goes off the same temp sesnsor it could be bad causing the car to think its cooler than what it is and staying in closed loop. Opinions?

No, the ecm has a different sensor it uses for reading temp. The temp gauge has a dedicated sending unit specifically for that purpose.

Thats what I was thinking, thanks pro50, thats what I was thinking. So how would one tell if the sending unit for the computer was accurate, or is it a guessing game?
