You get what you pay for, they are cheap for a reason. It is cheaper in the long run to do it right once.

well i wouldnt buy a set of assembled heads from ANY company if i was really gonna do it *right*...... so as long as the actual cores / castings are OK then it would be cheaper to get a bare set of patriots, work them over, and assemble with quality parts like ferrea valves and comp/crane/isky/crower springs

Most people do not have the know how or the proper tools to measure and assemble there own heads. And they will still need to go to the machine shop for a valve job to match the seats to the selected valve. You can buy assebled heads specific to the appliation if you are buying from the right people. I know Camshaft Innovations does this andthere are others aswell who dealwith camshafts and heads.

The problem with the Patriot's is not only the parts they use, therehasbeen notedmachining issues in the castings.

i guess it pays to be a machinist and have friends with machine shops[8D]

seriously, like i dont ever think about these things like they could ever present a problem. last week or so i needed to do a vavle job on a 1.3 L SOHC suzuki so i just brought it over to my buddys and gave him a 350 4 bolt main core i had in the garage in exchange for him letting me use his equip [8D]

Well ive been reading numerous threads on here for hours trying to come up with set up. I dont want shorty headers so i think im guna go with the regular GT40's. The ones that came on the early model V8 explorers. Then ill have those ported out like crazy. Whats the valve sizes stock on those? What kind of power can i expect from a fully ported set of GT40's? Plus it helps that my uncle owns a head machine shop so i can get them done fairly cheap.

Ive also seen thumpers E7 heads. It seems like he knows what he is doing. I just cant see an E7 head good enough to run 12s on motor with an E cam.

Thumper GT-40/40P's are even nicer and you can not beat his porting prices. www.thumperoforangepark.com

The heads that came on early Explorers are the GT-40P heads!(Have weird sparkplug angle, requires special headers)
P stands for production, Regular GT-40 heads were NEVER installed on explorers!
My '83 GT ran 12.831@104.44 with D8OE heads,( late 70's vintage junk, FREE)home gasket matched/pocket ported.
Milled .045" for compression and sized for 1.84" Int + 1.54" Exh. valves.
650 Holley, EDEL. Torquer 2 Int.,1" open carbspacer,.448" Int @204 Deg.472" exh@ 214Deg cam. 11/2" longtubes into 21/4" dual exh. 9x28" MT slicks and a 4.56 gear.
You don't need aftermarket heads if you keep the weight low and optimize your chassis.
Think NHRA Stock Eliminator type mods. Those guys regularly run in the 11's with minimal mods to the motor and a highly refined combination. AKA lots of test and tune!YEAHHHH!
