Default Should I buy this car?

I am looking for a 91-93 5.0 LX convertible and came across a fairly clean 1991 5.0 LX automatic for $1300.00. It is a So Cal car with a straight body, minor paint blems, decent interior and top. Everything works on the car. The car has over 100k miles. The problem is with the engine. After about 2000 RPM you can hear a fairly loud engine knock. I cannot tell if it is a rod knock or if it is in the valve train. I am thinking it will need an engine rebuild or hopefully I can find someone with a soldi 5.0 to drop in. What do you think, should I pull the trigger? Does anyone in So Cal have a decent 5.0 for sale?
