ok we marked where cylinder one is on the distributor, took the cap off, put cylinder one at top dead center, pointed the rotor towards cylinder one, made sure that little hex thing at the bottom was straight up and down and it will not drop in....what can i do?

when you start to push the distributor down, the rotor will begin to turn.
and if it wont go down into the hole.... just wiggle it around a little bit

the oil pump rod needs to go in the hole in the bottom of the distributor that's whats probably keeping it from dropping in. If you look in the hole where the distributor goes you will see the rod it maybe laying agaisnt the side if wiggling don't work what i did was got something and moved it to the center then put the dist in even doing that it may take a few tries good like
