'78 302 with 60k miles...
My boss has an old mercury somethin or another with a 302 in it just sittin in his yard...
He said the body's all rusted out but the engine should be fine with a little work...
He'll give it to me free if i just tow the damn thing off his property...
Is a 302 that old any good?
Thanks,
-Coop

RE: '78 302 with 60k miles...
it's nothing special and it's a flat tappet with non h.o firing order so it'd need a h.o firing order on the cam to work in a efi fox...but it'd be a okay motor to put in any carbed stang with the right performance parts added

Wuts the disadvantage of the flat tappet?
Andwut exactly ish.o firing order?
Wut would be some good mods to do?
Price is an issue,
but I can save...
I'm not in a rush to get it done.
I wanna do it right and I would prefer to do it to it's full potential.
How many horses am I lookin at bein able to safely push out of the block?
Blown or n/a...

H.O. firing order is the 351W firing order.
You are always better of with a roller, just like you said save and do it right once.

RE: '78 302 with 60k miles...
I am running a flat tappet motor with a set of 78 heads and it runs pretty good. The compression is lower than a H.O. bc of the bigger combustion chambers and most likly the stock cam has a low lift (below .400). I would rather have a roller motor so I can use a trick flow cam I want. But for now I am just gonna buy a new cam and install my GT40 heads. Then I am gonna do everything the right way when I build my 351w!

RE: '78 302 with 60k miles...
Car craft magazine came out with an article about 6 months ago or so on a 78' 302 build up out of a ranchero. And using stock crank, cam, lifters and the smog dog heads built a 250hp engine which is respectable enough to wrap someone around a tree. All they pretty much did was dump all the emmisions b.s.
