Default gears with a c-4?

whats the best gear ratio to use with a 3 speed with still being able to drive it on the street?

currently it has 3:55 but is a slug on take off, once it gets going its insane but i want more out of the hole..
im thinking 3:73 but will 4:10 leave me enough rpm to drive on the street? remeber is a 3 speed
thanks for the help

Stick with the 3.55's and get a looser stall convertor. It will help a bundle on the launch. If you go with a steeper gear, at 3.73's you will start spinning the engine a little more than my comfort zone allows. I suspect with 3.73's and 27" tall or so tire, you'd be around 3k RPM's at or around 60-65mph. Give or take, just from my past experiance. I have a set of 3.90's in mine, but it's not a long distance runner. I only live 2 miles from town, and theres plenty of hang out spots to just go park the beast and have fellowship with other hot rodders.

Hell I have 2.73's still andI like them. I like having the top end. And IDK about your gas milage but with my carb I am only getting 14mpg crusing at an average of 55-60 with some hot rodding. Adding the gears would only make it worse

I'm not worried at all. I have a v6 98 stang as a DD. But who in here wouldn't like to have a little more milage from their stang??

I ran 4.10's in mine with a built c4. I didn't like it when I had to travel down the interstate. @ 60mph cruising down the highway i was at about 3100rpm. Was not all too much of a fan, but it did take off pretty quick.

I'd say keep the gearing & get a stall. You won't regret it

I have the 2.73's back in with a T5 for now as it's my daily driver until I get time to paint the turbo notch & change the brakes, then i'll probably put the c4 back in, but I won't be going with 4.10's. My honest opinion I think 4.10's are pretty much just a strip gear, I wouldn't advise them on any street/strip car.

Ilove my 4.10's. 3100 at 63MPH (100.8kph) with 235/60/r14's. With the 2.73's it was at 2750 at 60ish MPH. The extra get up and go is well worth "higher" RPM's in my opinion. I'd go 5-speed or dare I say..... AOD([:'(][:'(][:'(]) if you're worried about revs, and gas. I didn't notice an increase in fuel consumption either. Well, thats my 2 cents/ramble.

I noticed a big mileage difference, but it may have been related to the throttle[&:]. I decided I don't like the strip much & swapped 2.73's back in with a T5 & went from 13mpg highway to 25mpg hwy. As far as track times they didn't change much c4/4.10 vs T5/2.73. Both were mid-high 12's, but I also was/still am running stock suspension & both times were using 245/50/16 street tires. If I had a better suspension &/or radials i'm sure the 4.10/c4 way would have been alot quicker.

My main reason for not liking the 4.10's was I had no intention of going to the strip or running wider than 255 & i never intend on buying a set of radials, so it was kind of pointless to have gears to where my car would spin the tires in 1st, 2nd, & halfway through 3rd (granted i'm sure a better suspension would help alot) + the only time I used 1st with the t5 & 4.10s was when I was sliding a corner, I always took off in 2nd gear with them.

I also didn't like to hear my engine turning that high of rpm down the road, some people don't have a problem with it, I didn't like it...

I guess 4.10's just aren't for everybody. If you spend alot of time at the track they might be idea. but all of my cars are 100% street only. I only go to the strip with them about once every year, if that.

I hear you on that that one. I like the track but I don't ever get the chance to go. My car is mainly just a street car. Here in Texas the average interstate speed is probably 75-80 and you have to take it to get anywhere pretty much and even with a c4 and 2.73's the rpms are up there and the car is screamin. Yea it is very easy to pass people but with any gear higher there wouldn't be much top end.

I have a C4 with 373 gears and actually drove 45 miles to the track yesterday, made a few runs and drove home...Yes, you are going to loose a bit on mileage, but who the heck cares? I have a built PA C4 with a TCI Super 4500 super street fighter and love it! I will never go back to the stick. But that is me. Ran some pretty good times as well. Never missed a shift, that is for sure.
