I would sue get the new rods myself, just for the peace of mind.
After all they will have 0 cycles on them, not millions like your old rods do........

your the genius using a 20 year old 600 gram dome, not this guy.
those pistons are tough as nails buddy, and most of the parts for that motor were purchased in the late 70's



to the OP, i'd look at the crane Z series flat tappet cams. they are a new series from them with better technology going into the lobe profiles than the older grinds (most of which have been around for 20 years).

i'd go with this one (actually a 351 firing order, better than the old 302 firing order), or this one (i was seriously considering this cam for my 289 but i reused the 300/300 .500/.500 old school grind from my 302 because i absolutely love the sound and the incredibly hard pull in the mid/upper rpms.
