what cylinders are at tdc at the same time?

RE: what cylinders are at tdc at the same time?
starting with number 1 = only number 1 when adjusting the rockers using the tdc method which I like...it about having the roller lifters on the flat side of the lobe/base circle.....you'd then move the balancer aproximately 1/4 a turn = 90 degrees and I pull a plug and shine a small light in the spark plug hole and wathc the cylinder next in the firing order hit tdc = 3 and so forht through the firing order.....anothe rmethod is the split overlap methood but with all rockers off the tdc methood tends to work well

Ok got them all done. I bought some .020" shims for the rockers but some rockers were too loose with them or either too tight without them. I may have to get new pushrods.

i thought when #1 is at tdc so is #6...no?

Number 6 is at TDC (180 degrees from the compression stroke).Valve overlap(valves open).
You cannot adjust the 6 hole at the same time as the no.1 (sorry!)
Do like MJR said and adjust each cylinder individually.
Take all the plugs out,put a long handle ratchet on the balancer bolt.(15/16 socket)
Put your finger over the no.1 plug hole (to make sure you are on compression stroke).
Rotate engine until TDC is indicated on balancer, then adjust the no.1 hole.
You could also remove the distributor cap to check rotor position(pointing at no.1).
This technique will also work if the dist. is not yet installed.

I adjust each valve seperately, with the wide variety of lobe profiles out there, it guarantees base circle accuracy.
But if you are curious...
When No. 1 cylinder is at TDC compression:
Adjust exhaust valve: 1, 2, 3, 4
Adjust intake valve: 1, 5, 7, 8
When No. 6 cylinder is at TDC compression:
Adjust exhaust valve: 5, 6, 7, 8
Adjust intake valve: 2, 3, 4, 6
