power steering pump whine
I bought an 88 gt 5.0
It has a power steering pump whine and i noticed the fluid was black and looked terrible. ive been using a turkey baster and taking out what i can and putting in new fluid and then running it for a minute, and doing the same over and over. It has gotten only a tiny bit better if any...
Is there any common problem with these, or any knownfixes please let me know
i know the ford pickups are famous for this but i didnt know the mustangs where...
Please any and all help is appreciated....

RE: power steering pump whine
There was a thread on here about two weeks ago about using some lind of PS fluid that supposedly quites it down alot. I ended up converting to manual steering but the while was definitely about 1/3 of the reason why I converted lol.

there's no fix that involves using that pump, the solution to a bad while is a new pump. my 88 gt was just like that when i got it, i got a new pump and it went away. all you need is to be cool with a shop around you to pull the pully and what not. pull the radiator and thats it really. thats a pretty easy replacement

sont mean to steal the thread but, my pump just started buzzin/whining too ,...is this the sound of imminent failure? cuz its seems a bit lacking on the power part of the "powere steering"

RE: power steering pump whine
I chimed in that the Lucas Oil power steering conditioner "helped" my stock pump quiet down. It didn't go away, but it did help. 2 years later I'm finally putting a new pump on it. Back in Decemeber when I moved the car to its new home it was whining HARD.
I went through the exact same steps as the OP. Removed coffee colored fluid with turkey baster and flushed by dillusion for about 3 quarts. That got the color about right, but really didn't help performance. Last year I drained the entire system at the rack and re-filled again. No noticable difference. This year the fluid was starting to look a little dark again, so I finally gave up and bought a new pump. If the fluid is dark next year I'm going to put a beast of a power steering cooler on it and see if that helps.
Good news is that new pumps are cheap. I think I paid $65 for mine at Napa.
