Default Replaced Flywheel?

My car make the most beautiful noise when I crank it up, the starter doesn't disengage like it's supposed to, problem is I've replaced the starter, and the guy I bought it from said he had replaced the starter too. So I'm guessing it's got something to do with the flywheel, and having to get it replaced.

Does any one know of a good write up for replacing my flywheel? Has any one here done it? I know a few people who have done them, but not on the fox and I want to make sure I have a road map when ever I do any open heart on my baby.

I hate to have to pay some one for something I am more than willing to do for free, I love to work on my car, that first drive is so nice knowing you're the one who made it run right again.

Thanks for any help

you need to make sure current from the ignition switch is not being applied to selonoid after crank mode is released..if so faulty ign switch if not..possible faulty selonoid on fenderwell...when it does it hit the selonoid with a screwdriver and see if it disengages then

Starter not disengaging from the flywheel has nothing to do with the flywheel and everything to do with the starter or electrical. Unless the starter was improperly shimmed. You may want to go to your local auto parts store and buy some Starter Shims. The new starter could be binding on the ring gear and not getting released when you let go of the ignition key.

If teh starter would grind the flywheel (technically the Ring Gear) then I might say it needs replacing. Check electrical and bench test the starter or a sticky bendix. (part the starter gear is connected to on the starter)

There should be an inspection plate on the tranny where you can see a few teeth at a time on the ring gear. Disconnect your coil and have someone manually turn the crankshaft by the harmonic balancer. The teeth should have a good solid edge on them. Any broken or worn teeth would indicate the need to replace the ring gear.

you might have the starter hooked up wrong to the solenoid if the small thin wire is on the wrong post it will make the starter drag. It should not be on the same side as the big gauge wire...

make sure there is a small plate between the bellhousing and motor, if its not there it will cause the starter to grind on the flywheel.
had this problem on my 82 capri. 5 starters later and that spacer plate and it was fixed.

starter shims on a fox wtf?????????????......mustangs don't use such..the bellhousing is what aligns it..never ever had to do such on a mustang if you do then there is a prob elsewhere

I changed the selonoid before I changed the starter. I'll have to check the wireing but I'm pretty sure it's right...as for the spacer there is not nore did I think there was supposed to be, the guy I got the starter from is ussually pretty good at letting me know if I might need anything else. But like I said I'll check the wireing and all that stuff, thanks for the advice, I'll get a heads up as soon as every thing checks out, (or not) Hopfully I can get it checked out tomorrow.

I agree with everyone else. The starter not disengaging is not a flywheel problem. Definatly check the starter wiring.

thanks matt.

Just a heads up, as of yet I haven't had time to work on the problem. I'll post a heads up when I do, free time is hard to come by right now.
