Default Dumb Question

This may be a dumb question, but if I wanted to find out what rear gears I am running, shoulding I just jack up the rear end, turn the tires once and count the drive shaft revolutions? Also, is it as easy as opening up the rear end and swapping the gears or is it a major deal?

Gears are usually done by shops to do getting the tolerances right but can be done in house. If your asking I wouls suggest having someone else do them. There should be a tag attachted to the rear that will identify what gears you have if your car is complely stock.

AOD or 5 speed???

Your method for checking the gears is correct and no it is not something that is a easy bolt on.

Truth is I am doubting the rear gears are stock. Bought from a yard so they couldn't tell me. It's a 5 speed. I looked for the tag but I haven't jacked it up and REALLY looked. The door jamb tells me its a 3.08 but who knows whats really in there.

There's some calculators on the net for mph/rpm/gears.
I'd post a link, but I am not sure what the rules are on off-site links being posted.

Just google it til you find one.

Problem here though is if you changed the rear, or gears have been changed, and the speedo gear has not been changed, this will not tell you anything.

Put it up on stands and mark the drive shaft w/keel or something equivalant.
Have a buddy spin the wheel.
That would be the best, and easiest way to do it.

the most accurate way to determine rear gear ratio is pull the cover ..count the teeth on ring and pinion and divide the two numbers = fail safe methood and 100 percent accurate ..any other way is a close approximate

Just jack it up , mark your tires at the valve ,spin them once and count the driveshaft revelutions, very easy. While you have it up make sure it is a limited slip rear and use jackstands. Then grease any point you can find GOOD LUCK
