Default Timing question

So here goes. Look at the engine in my SIgnature and give me suggestions on what you would do. I just got my new MSD Dizzy and it is set for the most neutral timing curve. I do not know what advance the cam istself has built in and i do not know what the timing was set to on the timing gears. obviously all of that plays a part but im not sure how to set up the timing stop or the spring combo for the mechanical advance. I am only a little experienced at this level of engine set up so someone with knowledge please enlighten me.

buy the way...........

Good luck...and were all counting on you!

Default RE: Timing question

cam timing and ignition timing are two seperate things and work independant of one another..most cams have a 2-4 degree advance built into them and camtiming relates to the opening and closing of the valves and is not related to spark delivery which is what ignition timing is.........most sbf's have proven to produce the best power with a total ignition advance of 34-36 degrees btdc...........so choose a stop accordingly and with a timing light check total advance which in most cases should be reached by 3to 3.5 k in a peformance application........based on the rpm band of your cam you most likely would want full advance reached when the power band starts to kick in so refer to cam spec card and then choose a spring set up based on that.... most sbf's will work good with the red stop and light blue springs choosen and an intitial base timing ob 13-15 degrees....this is just a base to start with and tune to your application
