Default Shifting Problems

All of a sudden, when i shift into 2nd gear at rpm's higher than about 3800, the gears grind. it doesn't happen in any other gear, or if i downshift. i called a ford dealership, and the mechanic said that it could be a couple thousand $'s to repair. if anyone knows what it could be and how, and how much to repair it would be greatly appreciated. thanks

s-y-n-c-r-o-n-y-z-e-r-s

parts to rebuild and replace syncro, maybe 150 bucks at most

labor to pull tranny, rebuild, put back in... 800 bucks or so... by the time you throw in a new clutch and misc charges, 1200 - 1300 would be expected by the time its over

Try to pause between shifts to let the revs drop a little so you can change gears without the grinding... its only gonna get worse by the way

Do u have a short shifter? Its a common thing with them to grind 2nd gear a bit if you are in the upper RPMs if you let the cluth out too soon.. those powershift and have a short throw shifter know what i mean.. just keep in mind to get it in the gear fully before releasing the clutch if you are gunna hot rod it.. but still take it easy

Default Shifting Problems

I found myself getting lazy when i shifted and then one day a buddy was test driving the same year mustang and he seen me driving.. we hit a red and we both took off i drive my car like i stole it so i hit about 4grand and powershifted (shift without taking foot of of gas) and slammed it in 2nd gear.. scratched the gear very hard and took off.. we hit red agin.. this tiem i desided to ease up.. took off, at about 3800 i shifted normaly and GRINDED gears like i was a rookie. Then next time.. i did it agian.. i noticed that the higher the rpm the more you have to be sure to get it in gear because the short throw shifter has such a quick movement that u expect it to be in gear.. the flywheel is moving faster at higher speeds so in turn there is less give in the catching of the gears. Pretty simple if you think about it, but thats just it, after driving everyday we tend to rely on habits.
