New Mustang
The other day I got a 89 SSP Mustang LX. I have been wanting a fox-body for a long time, and it finally happened. It has the 5.0 H/O and some beefy sway bars... I'm not real familiar, and fords in general, so I had a few questions... First, when I bought the car, I was about 40 miles away from my home. On the way back, the temp gauge was slowly going up, intill it completely over-heated. I stopped on the side of the road next to a farm, and waited for it to cool down, and put some water in it and got back home, with a nice downhill coast to cool it off. I was wondering what could be the possible causes of this overheating... I am planning on flushing it out tomorrow, but would like to know what else would be a possibility... I am able to drive about 5 miles to work everyday without any problems, but im guessing that is just because it doesnt have enough time to warm all the way up...
Next, On the drive home, the speed limit was 65 most of the way... The car came with an automatic with overdrive. When I was driving, everytime I would lift off the throttle and try to get back on it, it wouldn't catch intill it hit the certain RPM it was actually at with the engine, if that makes sense. Another thing is that it always slips out of overdrive... I asked the previous owner about this, and he said something about there being a small pin (?) that went into the transmission, and that it needed a heavy duty pin... I don't know if anyone can clear up what he is talking about... Any help with any of this is very much appreciated

RE: New Mustang
wow, clean as a whistle i must say! nice find!
Overheating- grab a new thermostat and try and recreate the old senario.
There can be many things that can cause it but the thermostat would be the cheapest and most usual problem.
Overdrive slippage is a common problem with aod's and sadly i can remember the part that breaks.
my transmission buddy says it has something to do with something rubbing against the casing ????? (someone will answer that question better)

another cheap fix that worked for my car and my bronco(5.0L) was a new radiator cap to stop the over heatingI'm not an auto guy but the tranny not "catching" til a certain RPM sounds like the belts in the tranny slipping or the torqueconverter slipping...good luck with the new car

RE: New Mustang
The "Belts" you are refering to, do not exist in an automatic transmission. I think you were refering to the Bands and or clutches. Any number of things can cause slippage in an auto, just pin pointing what it is.
Back to the original post, sounds to me that you best be on the market for a new transmission.

RE: New Mustang
Hi,
Everyone hit the nail on the head with what could be causing the overheating, (thermostat, radiator cap), but also make sure that your radiator fan is working too. I would also pressure test the radiator cap as well.
Hope this helps!
