Default Running Rich, new exhaust, tune up? Ideas?

Ok, here we go....
1995 Mustang GTS
5.0 L 302 HO
BBK Cold air, MSD Hyfire 6 and blaster coil.
Its running rich.
I just purchased a Pypes performance exhaust with Cats, Xpipe, and complete stainless system.
I dont want to clog the new cats, and jack them up.
No trouble codes, where should I start?
I am doing plugs cap and rotor today as well as a factory timing to 10deg. TDC
Please help, want to get it right before I go back to Iraq on the 30th.
And dont want to use my whole 18days leave under da hood!
Thanks for any info.
MAF looks clean, and the O2 sensors look ok...there are 2, should there be 4?
Thanks a million for any help!

How did you determine it's running rich?....... suggest to run a DIY KOER Self-Test and check for A/F control failure codes first. LUK

Codes 311 314 during KOER test.
Codes 111 111 during KOEO test.
I know that 111 111 is no faults found.
Thermactor system inop right and left side...
The pump is running, is there a valve or something that can cause this, or what are my starting points.
Joel, you are the MAN! You are a true Stang GuRu
Next question on the cyclinder balance test, what is a quick WOT?
Wire Off Terminal?
please explain.
Any pointers you can give me will be very much appreciated.
I got new plugs 10mm wires and cap and rotor today, and will re-time tonight...any choice of timing? 10deg BTDC?
what is your opinion?
Thanks again, I made soem progress today!
YAY!!!

also, should there be a smog pump line on each side of exhaust?
This system is bastardisezed!
I am about to put this PYPES system on, and if it should have a line going to each bank, now is the time to get it on!
Thanks again!

Sarge,

Set initial spark to ~12-13 deg. .... make sure the engine can handle it (check for engine ping under partial/full load). Those KOER codes shouldn't cause any A/F or driveability problems, but if you want to make sure the thermactor is working, remove the crossover or banjo tube (the one that goes to the rear of the heads) and make sure it's not clogged. This is a typical problem with the thermactor system..... nor are there any A/F control failure codes.

The "quick WOT" after the KOER codes have been output, is to have the EEC initiate the cylinder balance test. Once all codes are output, increase rpms so the cylinder balance test routine is initiated (it will last anywhere from 3-5 minutes)...... when finished, the cylinder balance codes will be flashed. ran the balance test and got 9 code on all three passes.
Reset ecm, and still get the 311 314 code on there everytime!
I will take the tubes off in the morning.
The car is wonderfully driveable, but a friend says that it seems like it is so rich, that it may clog the new pypes hi-flow cats really quick.
I can tell aswell that as is, it WILL NOT pass texas emissions regs for inspection.
Thanks so much for the help...will LUK!

Don't get caught in the perception trap...... if the system doesn't show A/F related failure codes, O2 sensors look fine (no signs of excessive fuel), spark plugs are OK, and cylinder balance test = PASS......... I really don't see anything that needs to be fixed...... thermactor system is your call, but it should pass a sniffer test.

roger that,
I dont plan on buying a new pump, but I will see about the clog, and when I put on teh new exhaust, perfect time to make sure not clogged there too.
Will also eyeball the O2 Sensors then as well.
Thanks a million for the help Joel.
Saved me time and money, I think that the timing may be part of the issue too, seems to be at 4deg after TDC.
so that may fix it up some as well.
Thanks again, will LUK. keep your EXPERT eyes open. LOL
Guys liek you are what make this forum ne of the best on the web!

I would definately look into the o2 sensors, you cant tell if they are good or bad from the exterior. Check ltft and if your air pump is always upstream you might send a false lean condition and enrich the a/f mixture to compensate. Also the question how did you determine its running rich was a good one.
