Default what starter for 164 tooth 11inch flywheel

alright guys so i think i figured out my problem. i used the same starter i used on the 5.0 as the 351. the flywheel on the 5.0 is a 10.5 while the 351 is an 11 inch. i have a ford racing starter and i looked on summit it says it fits everything but 164 tooth flywheels. when i looked up my new 11 inch flywheel i found out it was also 164 tooth. im wondering what kind of starter i can use for this application. how come only the ford racing starter says not to use with 164 tooth? is there a special starter gear i need or what? thanks in advance

I dont think that you need anything special to fit your app. A given flywheel/flexplate uses its bellhousing for proper spacing... for example here is one starter part number that fits all you see below:
Powermaster 19162
Fits engine sizes: 302, 351, 289, 260
Fits years
* 1963, * 1964, * 1965, * 1966, * 1967, * 1968, * 1969, * 1970, * 1971, * 1972, * 1973, * 1974, * 1975, * 1976, * 1977, * 1978, * 1979, * 1980, * 1981, * 1982, * 1983, * 1984, * 1985, * 1986, * 1987, * 1988, * 1989, * 1990, * 1991, * 1992, * 1993, * 1994, * 1995, * 1996, * 1997, * 1998, * 1999, * 2000, * 2001

yeah im just confused why the ford racing starter would say not for use with 164 tooth flywheel but have the same amount of tooth on the starter gear as the power master

^^^true but if said bellhousing is designed for spacing off a 10.5 flywheel and you install a flywheel 1/2 inch in diameter larger and try and shove the starter in there it'll cause the prob the op is having..........best thing to do is put the proper 157 tooth flywheel in the car to create an ideal alignment with starter and ring gear

well the lakewood has 2 spots for the starter...one for 10.5 and one for 11 inch..there was a small peice of metal you bang out of the starter hole on the backing plate and and extra set of holes..plus the flywheel is designed for the stroker kit so if im changing anything its got to be the starter

so are you saying you have a lakewood bellhousing?? if so use the correct slots....to solve the prob it ain't gonna happen via starter change.....as mentioned above ford starters are designed the same.. the proper spacing is determined via bellhousing design not starter change

well i used the correct slots but there was play in the starter. like it could be moved closer to the flywheel but then the bolt holes didnt line up. i mean i used the starter for about a week and it was fine. no weird noises or grinding. the car started fine.could it be that the teeth on the flywheel just couldnt handle the 10.1 compression and solid lifters? b.c its a real chore to crank it over even with a breaker bar by hand.

my stock starter labors hard on my 347 with 10.5 compression...but my LT'S also wrap around the starter which is why it has a hard time starting on hot soak...cold start it's fine

mine used to be an AOD car and an aod uses a 164 tooth flexplate and when I switched to a manual and 157 tooth flywheel I used starter so stater shouldn't be any different and should be fine
