AOD Valve body...

AOD Valve body...
So it's 5 a.m. here, and I am physically, mentally and emotionally exhausted... I took apart my spare AOD transmission from an 85 Grand Marquis Wagon with the intent of putting my shift kit in it for my 89 LX... I ran into a few problems... the valve body is the older style, so a lot of the shift kit can't be used on it... which frankly, pisses me off, because I would have thought it was out of an 85, it would have the newer style... My question from there is, can I take the valve body out of my 89 aod and put it in the 85...
Any help on clearing that up would be great... So far, this transmission crisis is a nightmare... I just want to drive my car....
And also, If anyone knows how to install the heavy-duty overdrive band, let me know....
Thanks in advance guys...

Is there something wrong with the valve body in your car? I work at a ford dealership and there always seems to be different valve body gaskets for each year. I cant says if it will or not. as far as heavy duty band. you have to remove the oil pump to get at it. if you stand it straight up you wont problems with clutch drums coming out.

Aod
I just rebuilt my 94 AODE and replaced both the OD band and the Rev Band along with all the frictions and steels, servos, solenoids etc.... I have to say I will probably never do that again. It took me almost 2 months. Also, come to find out for my tranny there are different reverse bands, therefore I had to replace the Rev servo to match the band... (After I reinstalled the tranny) Rudedog is right you need to pull the tranny, and mount it to a makeshift table, engine side up.
It is going to be a full rebuild. This is a super high level summary of what needs to be done:
1) Remove Tranny
2) Remove valve body & Servos
3) Remove Trq converter
4) Remove Tranny pump
now the fun stuff
5) remove turbine shaft which will include:
5a) intermediate clutch pack (Might as well replace while your in there)
5b) rev clutch pack (Might as well replace while your in there)
5c)forward clutch pack (Might as well replace while your in there)
6) disengage OD band from anchor pin and remove.
7) reassemble and pray.
This cannot be done without a real tranny shop manual like an ATSG manual. (Which kinda stink but was all I had)
It is possible for a well accomplished home mechanic to do with alot of patience and some ingenuity in place of the specialized tools.
Good Luck.

Yes you can use the 89 valve body in the 85 tranny. It would actually be an upgrade!. Pre 89 AODs have a 3-4 accumulator in them, but in 89, Ford eliminated the need for the 3-4 accumulator by reprogramming the valve body. When you install a 89 valve body in an older AOD, it just bypasses the 3-4 accumulator, but it will work fine.

Semantics! The ports in the valve body are different, so they direct the fluid differently than the 88 and older VBs. The plate is also drilled differently to match the port configuration. This "redesign", addressed a flaw with the earlier AODs
