Default Weird Electrical Problem

Went out to start my 87 Mustang GT Convertible this morning and it wouldn't start. Actually, it would start then immediately stall. Then I noticed that when the ignition key was in either the accessory or on position none of the things (radio, warning lights, etc) which should work would work. The power door locks worked and interior lights came on so it is not a complete electrical failure.

Obviously seems to be something electrical, perhaps ignition related. It rained here last night (which is very unusual in West Texas) and I wonder if the problem will "go away" once things dry out. Biggest problem is I have it parked behind my main car and now have neither that I can use.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

You have an ignition switch under your steering column. They cost about 15 bucks at a parts store. When you turn your key tumbler it activates that switch in different positions, that switch sends power to your accessories, fuel pump, and ignition system. Try replacing it. If it dont work then take it back

Make sure you check all of your fuses before you start replacing parts.

be sure , they dont take electrical stuff back for that reason, because you may have let the smoke out of it .

Thanks for the replys. Checked the fuses and pulled the only one listed that could have an effect like this. They all seem o.k.

My first impression also was a bad ignition switch since everything works except those things that only work with the ignition switch turned to either acc or on. Unfortunately, the only maintenance manual that I have doesn't have instructions for replacing a switch. Anyone out there have instructions for this?

Well, I just found the following instructions on replacing the switch (with pictures!) on the web by doing a search. I love the 'net!

Thought I'd post the site in case anyone else needs it.
