Default Anyone had to replace Rack & Pinion on 1987 Fox GT

Well I have been waiting for 2 months to get my mustang out of the body & paint shop... first time I had taken the car for a ride since I got back from Iraq. The steering wheel had about 6 inches of play in the steering... I took it to a local shop and was told that the entire rack and pinion has gone bad... I was quoted $450 for all the parts and labor to fix it.... (It is a non-power steering being put in) I was just wondering if that sounded about right for how much it should cost... i had two different shops take a look at it and both estimates were within $10-15 dollars of each other....
