Another option would be to send your current trans to Gordon Levy and let him rebuild it to your specs. They can handle a lot of power once he's done with them.

The TKO600 has a little milder 2.87 first and only drops to 1.89 in second, making it a better performer when there is plenty of engine and rear end for the job. Generally speaking, if you have a 3.73 or lower (3.89, 4.10, etc...) diff. you want to go with the TKO600 but this is by no means a univeral statement.

EVERY ENGINE, DIFF AND TRANSMISSION COMBINATION IS DIFFERENT. SPEAKING TO US ABOUT YOUR SPECIFIC APPLICATION GOES A LONG WAY to making sure you get the right gear set.

If you are just considering durability, I don't think you will ever break a TKO500.

What is your diff ratio, redline on your engine, cam profile and tire size?

great info here.

as for the question....

i have 4.10 gear's in the rear end, i dont run my car past 5500rpm's, stock cam, and the tires are 26" (mickey thompson et street radial's 235/60/15 on weld draglite's)

Based on that description, I would definitely go with a TKO600.64 from American Powertrain (of course). With 4.10s and a 2.87 1st gear you will have a very streetable launch and will not tack out too quickly when running the car hard. The taller .64 OD will also help the car's road manners and gas mileage by knocking the revs down a little more that the TKO500 on the highway. This will give you a great balance of performance, cruising and durability. Give us a call at 931.646.4836 or e-mail info@americanpowertrain.com when you are ready to rock!

i vouch for the tko 500...i had one and it was a blast to drive..it is a little notchy for a while but it tends to break in and becomes smoother in engagement...i had the one with the 26 spline input shaft and I used 4.56 rear gears...if you do not have enough power in your mustang, i feel your time may suffer with that high 1st gear that is in the TKO 600....i only was making about 313 rwhp on my mustang and was able to get an 11 out of her with 4.56's and the tko 500...if you have alot of power (nitrous, supercharger, turbo) then i would think you would want the tko 600 for the 1st gear it has...that way you are able to hook and go and make up time on the top end...either or...they will both handle about the same amount of power...it comes down to 1st gear selection

my opinion only of course

YIKES! I wish I had bought it from you. Can't say I'd enjoy paying for the gas, but those trucks sure are hot! Like a Mustang you can tow your jet skis with.

When you pick up another one, let me know and maybe we can make it a killer stick!

with my 4.10 rear end, and spraying a 100-150shot out of the hole, i think the tko500's tall first gear would hurt me.

id prob be out of first gear before i passed the tree, or wouldent be able to sprayin first at all!

so far the plan is for a tko600 with the .63 6th gear, all the stuff i need to swap from this aod to the tko, and id like to get an aluminum driveshaft while im at it, i just need to make a list of part's and start buying.

i cant buy the expensive stuff untill april or so (gotta save most the bean's for when we move around that time) but i would like to start a pile of part's!
