Default Tachometer Troubles (insert an

I have a 92 GT, hence the name, and my tach just decided one day that it wanted to hang out at 3000 rpms or so when it is running. It moves a little bit sometimes, like when i step on the gas and rev it up.... a lot. Ford is kind enough to carry tachometers, but they only carry tachometers for older GTs. As a matter of fact, my car misses the cut off date by like 3 months. They say my newer tachometer is obsolete. There was a price difference of like 30 dollars when they were still in production. Can I use the tach that i could get from ford? What is the difference? Better yet, is there a way I could fix my current tach? I think it could be a simple wiring problem, but I'm told its not.
