They make a tool specifically for taking those caps off. However, you can take a screw driver and a hammer and going around the perimeter of the cap, lightly tapping it apart. Then you just tap it back in place when finished.

ok thanks. I looked in another thread that described it and I decided not to change it yet. I'm not sure that is the problem but from what someone described to me it seamed like that was it. there was some play in the wheel and I figured it was the wheel bearing because my car chirps while not on the brakes but once I got down to just the wheel bearing and tried to check for play it feels fine, so what I'm planning on doing is putting it back together and taking the car into a shop for a brake and suspension inspection instead of replacing random things until I find out what it is.
thanks again, sorry about the post. should have looked around more first

on a 95 it should be made of plastic.... just pry it off..

then take the cotter pin out, the retaining cap, and then the nut itself

ok well I don't know if thats my problem or not. the wheel does have play in it. most of the play is side to side. does that seem more like wheel bearing or ball joints? I took it apart and couldn't feel any play but I don't know what else to try and didn't want to wast $100 that could be spent on the actual problem.
now someone told me they think its coming from the rear when I drove by. so tomarrow I'm gonna jack up the rear and spin it and see if I hear anything. when I changed the pads one of the sliders was sticking so I hope its that but the front passenger wheel has play so I'm not sure.

top to bottom play placing your hands in such a position would more so be wheel bearing play placing your hands at 9 and 3 on the clock position and rocking side to side and feeling play would more so indicate to me a inner or outer tie rod worn/play in it, have someone wiggle the wheel while you inspect for play in the locations I mentioned

ok I just checked and it seams like its the inner tie rod end. how hard is that to replace? After I do it I will have to have an alignment right? The outer tie rod end seamed fine, it didn't look like it had any play in it but I might as well replace all of them at once to be sure.
