Default I'M BACK! and with some new exhaust questions!

Hey guys... I used to have a 1990 5.0 notch awhile back, then sold it to my cousin, who occasinallty uses my old user name, but I forget what it is.

I got the mustang itch again, and searched craigslist and found one, for $2500. 79K orginal miles, hatchback, 5.0 with e303 cam, the works, uglyass center line drag rims, nice cervani hood, good paint, etc...

Only bad thing, the exhaust. It was so rusted out, I put a new one on it. first, I slapped on (in place of the holey, rusted out o/r H) two individual straight pipes, to two Cherry Bomb Xtreme mufflers. They are equivilent to the 10 series Flows. single camber, about 6"'s long...they sound REAL ballsy around 1500-2500, which doesnt give me much room to work with!... anything after that sound POPPY and just plain doesnt sound good. Sounds like an old f150 302 with straights the whole way out. Should i have put on an o/r H? Would that help even out the sound? yeah yeah, I could swap out the muffs, but I had these on my notch with an o/r X, and I thought it sounded real good, so I figured straight pipe -> muffs woulda been good too. Guess I was wrong!

What are your thoughts?

Thanks for the response mjr,

I guess my real question is if a straight pipe, causes this sound, even with mufflers (albeit TINY ones...). Does the H baffle it some? I assume thats probably what the "-" in the "H" is for, right?

take off the hack job redneck exhaust, and put something reasonable on it... Like a summit O/R H and a set of flows (even though I hate flows)

Ok, I was asking about the h-pipe, cause I was already planning on removing the straight pipe before the mufflers and putting another mid in its place, hence the H-pipe question. Also, the cherry bomb extremes are identical, inside and out, to the 10 Series Delta Flow Flowmaster race application mufflers, just stamped with the CB logo instead. So yes, essentially I already got flows on there, only difference, they are red.

So while I appreciate your feedback, it didn't answer my question in my last post about whether or not the h-pipe will most likely remove the poppy, trucklike sound on acceleration or not. I do not want to spend $200 to replace it if it comes out exactly the same, that's why I am trying to figure out what the difference would be. I have not had experiences with either h-pipes, or straight pipes in the past, only x-pipes...thats why I was asking.

Thanks

i would think relpacing the straight pipes with an h-pipe would fix it. i knew somebody else who had straight pipes on their car and it didnt sound very good lol.

When i first bought my car it had the stock h pipe and straight pipes after that, no mufflers. when i removed the cats for an off road x pipe I lost alot of my low end torque and got the crappy sound I think your talking about. I got a pair of chambered mufflers welded in to hopefuly give me some backpressure back and it worked, I got my low end back and the sound was worlds better. hope that helps.

...after thinking about the sound, I came to the conclusion that it is not a popping sound on acceleration, but a "thwapping", like an old f150 with no exhaust would sound like...

Heres a video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_q-4IbQTV9U

I love the way it sounds up until like 2,500... after that, horrible and thwappy.

Remember, this is straight piped to CB extremes which are identical to the Flowmaster 10 seres race application mufflers. Is a h-pipe in place of the straight fix my "problem"? I know Ive aked this a few times, but now I have a video up, so I figured you guys can get a more detailed idea of what I am dealing with!!
