Shifters that are not notchy
#12
I also liked the stock shifter after I tried a tri-ax and a hurst.I ended up using the tri-ax with the stock shift handle. Its a mix between the two,you get the spring loaded 2-3 shift and the added leverage from the longer stock handle.

Whats up Bikeboy? Hows the new motor? No more top end terror? I have had all these shifters....dont like any of them...I run stock ones in my cars....as you stated you cant shift as fast....Ironically I found pro 5.0 to be the best, with a fresh clutch and stock shift ****...oh yes...thank god you dont have a tremec. Talk about notchy. lol.
Yea the motor noise was a piston to valve issue. but i put in some new ross forged pistons that i had flycut for the clearance and no more noise

I have used B&M's and liked it for the most part. No its not as smooth as a stock piece but it is much more precise an I think it gives a better feel of being in gear than a stock one does. I cheat with stock handles and cut a good inch out of the angled section to give a slightly shorter throw. I am gonna upgrade my 98's and get one for my 5 speed I will have after Iraq but can't choose what I want yet either.

man grow a set and slam that thing into gear lol. after your rebuild your shifter should feel smoother so i would wait till you get that done and then rethink what you wanna do. i have a hurst in mine and it is just a little notchy but you can man handle that shifter and it wont break nor have i ever missed 3rd with with it.

None of the above mentioned shifters are notchy. In fact no shifters are notchy at all. The notchy feeling you are describing comes from the transmission. Can't believe you guys believe this. Remember installing your shifter. No detent action, no notched action. Just a ball swinging around opposite the shifter. The only reaction from a shifter mechanism is the centering to the 3rd and 4rth gate.
It's the synchronizer lining up the gears you are feeling. Once the speed matches, it slips in.
The reason you feel it more pronounced on aftermarket shifters is the leverage is reduced in a trade off for a shorter throw.
I'm all for aftermarket shifters. They are usually tighter (minor reason) but most important is the positive stops. My favourite combination is the B&M shifter mechanism with a stock handle. Even stock handle plus 1 or 2" taller.
