I have the same issue with my 88, I am going to get it fixed in the next couple weeks. When I start my car up it goes up 2 little lines then always goes back down. Sometimes you can just clean your exsisting unit and it works, my mechanic did a test and passed one but failed the other so could be electrical? I will let you know if you still need to know. but if you have to replace or clean it yeah you have to lower the tank and fix it. not sure on the mechanical ones will have to do some research

no I don't the test, but will let you know next time i go to my mechanic hopefully within the next week or 2.
