Default Flywheel Installation

I recently pulled my tranny so that I could do a clutch replacement. I also pulled the flywheel in order to have it resurfaced. After i pulled the flywheel (without marking it) I noticed that there are a few balance holes bored into the back.

My question is:

Are the balance holes used to balance out the crank like the harmonic balancer or are they used to balance out an imbalance in the flex plate and it doesnt' matter which way I bolt it to the crank?

All of the previous threads I looked at do not seem to give any indication of specific placement of flywheel and pressure plate can I make the assumption that it just works?

they're used to balance the crank.
but don't worry, the holes will only match up one way, so if you go to put the bolts in and some don't line up, keep turning the flywheel until they do.
