Default Need Mechanic Expert - PICS attached - Inside Valve Covers

So I purchased this '93 GT 5.0 motor with 90k miles on it. I was told it was in great running order, no issues at all. Purchased from a reputable company.

I am doing a 'light' tear down to replace some components and clean the motor up. Part of this is replacing the old valve covers with new.

I removed the valve covers and took pictures of the inside. I do not know what the heck I am looking at and if all looks 'normal' or if something glaring stands out to someone.

So I took some snapshots and wanted to post them here. Maybe you can't tell if all is good by these pics, but maybe some folks know what it should NOT look like and tell me all looks ok from the surface.

Thanks for your opinion, experts and advice!!!

looks a little dirty but not horrible, for the most part it looks fine for 90k, it has a little build up/oil tarnish, probably let a few oil changes go longer than they should off, but I wouldn't worry about it, reseal covers and be on your way

Looks like your normal cooked on, baked on, stuck on kinda oil/sludge and grease of an older engine that has has shotty oil changes. Looks normal to me. I have seen dozens and dozens of SBF this way.

Eh..... all thing considered, it doesnt look all that bad.... but it looks like there is some over spray from someone painting something. Its rather strange looking because its not even.... but all in all, all the parts are there, and its relatively clean. I agree with the guy above me. Change the valve cover gasket and go about your way!

Just a side note...... those are the ugliest rockers EVAARRRRR!

No one finds it odd that the 5th rocker doesnt have any of that orange/brown coloring on it? Is it just me? WTF?

That thing looks like it got real hot at one time with irregular oil changes (I have seen much worse though). With some good oil and regular changes you should be fine. The tar and sludge may even break down over time and clean up with quality oil and regimented maintenance.

Can one generally assume by this view that the pistons and rings are ok?
