the girdle will give extra support to your bottom end by connecting the main caps

yeah connecting the caps together has nothing to do with making the block physically stronger.. but by all means if you wanna waste your money on that crap please feel free to do so

Yeah... the consensous of most real SBF builders is "dont waste your money on a main girdle". Not gonna stop your block from splitting.

I think the 2-bolt and 4-bolt main question was answered pretty good. With these engines, you might as well giveup on the 4-bolt main idea unless you plan on buying an aftermarket block, but i think i read the word "cheap" somewhere in your original post so not happening. In fact, if youre looking to get out "cheap" with a 347, i think youre gonna get in a little too deep. **** adds up quick... especially if you wanna make any kind of decent power.

I never said it would stop a block from splitting i was just implying that (my opinion) a girdle would strengthen the bottom end by tying the bottom end together reducing the deflection in the main cap assembly

that can be solved with a good set of ARP main studs. about the only thing a main brace will do is keeo the motor "together" when it actually splits in half. while there are ways around the weak 302 mains like getting a mexican block or an older 302 block. if you want to build a big hp 302 you need to go with an aftermarket block, DART, BOSS, etc. or you could just get a 351W and stroke it out to a 408 for some good torque. the 351C is an AWESOME block, but its very hard to find a suitable block because they're prone to developing cracks. however, if you DO find one a 351C can be safely punched out .060 over unlike a 302/351W which is borderline at .040.
other than that, parts to fit one in a mustang are sort of hard to find and there are practically no options for EFI. carb, go hog wild. exhaust fitment is a b1tch too with a 351C.
