Default 4 bolt vs. 2 bolt

I am going to start doing some research on motors and I really don't know what the difference between a 2 bolt and a 4 bolt main are? And is there any way to tell with a motor that is not torn down. And what is the difference between a 351W and a 351C. Thanks all!

um i believe the differance betweet 4 bolt and 2 bolt is that a 4 bolt has 4 bolts holding down the main caps and the 2 bolt has only 2 bolts holding down the main caps ..main caps hold the crank in place .. you can tell by pulling off the oil pan i suppose ....

351 windsor
351 cleveland
tech differances between them unfortunately i know not my friend lol

Yup, 4 bolt mains have 4 bolts securing the main caps down. Unless you take off the oil pan or you know your motors (which you don't) you can't tell. Most ford small blocks from what I know are 2 bolt mains.FRPP has 4 bolt main aftermarket blocks.

take pan off and look at main caps , 4 bolt main blocks are stronger but 2 bolts do the job . you really dont need a 4 bolt main unless u plan on making alot hp . and 351w and 351c the windsor is a small block and the cleavland is big block if thinking right .

So I gather 4 bolt is for strenght on the crank. What are some opinions on motors out there. 302, 351, 390. I see a lot of people have 347 stroker. What exactly is a 'stroker'? I am just looking to get ahold of a motor for cheap and put some money into and see what hp I can get. I just want to be in the 12's without sc, tc, or nitrous!

4 bolt = strength & high reving! ....if you plan on shifting at 6800 rpm's or higher, the way to go!

When built properly a cleavland is a F*ing beast... That style head is no joke

a stroker is a 302 whose block is .030 and throw on crank is longer as well as longer connecting rods, 302 = 3.00 throw on crank 4.000 piston and 5.090 rod,.....347 = 3.4 throw on crank and a 5.400 or 5.315 rod and a 4.030 piston.

aye as MJR said stroker is basically a combination of the piston being a larger diameter and the rods being longer making the piston move in and out further.

As for a cleveland iv'e heard they are a little harder to find parts for and im pretty sure you can't just swap parts from you basic 302 like you could a windsor(even though most wouldn't want to do that anyways due to the combination differences).
