Default 1991 LX 5.0 Need Some Pointers

My closest friend passed away and left me his 91 Mustang. I am getting it in running order again, but wanted to ask a couple of questions. The vehicle currently has some performance upgrades:

Dual Flowmaster exhaust
Intake, K&N air filter
3.73 gears

That's all I know it has for sure, what other performance mods can I make that won't bust my budget. I only want to put another $500-$1,000 into it. I already had to buy it a new battery, hoses, belt and radiator. It has been sitting for over a year now. I am going over to his dad's place to put in all the stuff I mentioned tomorrow and polish and wax it.

Also, I noticed the headlights retain water, should I just drill a hole in the assembly so it can drain? Also, what are the largest tires I can fit on the stock 16" pony rims without any rubbing, or modification?

Anyone? This is the first Ford I have owned, I have only owned Chevrolet's my whole life, so I don't know much about Mustangs.

As far as mods go, I would suggest a short throw shifter, Depending on the exhaust set up headers and/or an off road mid-pipe. Throttle bodies are a pretty cheap upgrade as well. As for your headlights I wouldn't put a hole in them, they will likely still get moisture back inside. There are several cheap 6 piece headlight kits for around $100..

Thanks to everyone, I figured the experts would be here. Thank you, I will miss him a lot, I am taking this car more for the sentimental value, I want to do it up right. Where can I get the headlights for $100?

There is a shop on Ebay by the name of Foxmustangrestoration. They have the factory 6 piece headlight assembly for $100.
