Default New to the fox game, beginner questions.

hello yall!

New to the site and to this 1987 fox body I was give by my father-in-law. It has 65,500 miles, only 500 of them were mine since December of '08. I don't know where to begin modding it.

I want to know if 5.0s are backed up from the factory like SBCs are. My brother (odd one of the family) is a chevy guy and he put a exhaust (just catback) and made 20hp on his 89 Trans Am (350), is this true for the fox or no? I know an exhaust will help but just how much?

Also, never a bad idea to replace the cap, rotor, wires, and plugs. =]

I would start with a basic tune-up before you start modding it. Unless it has already had one recently.

If it is completely stock then remove the air silencer in the airbox, get a full exhaust, cold air intake, gears, subframe connectors, remove emissions if you don't get tested, and a really big one is a good set of wide rubber to go around if you don't already have it.

Thats a good start.

A cat back won't give a 89 T/A 20 hp, but that is beside the point. Start off by making sure everything is in good order, with such low miles it should be pretty easy. Then start with the basics. Headers, cold air, gears etc. The real power with these cars comes when you change the heads, cam and intake, or add a power adder.

I don't know if he was right or wrong, but I never payed attention to him .

I'm just curious on how hard they can be driven all the time. My F-I-L never modded it, he took good care of it and used it as a DD, but did drive it hard.

Thanks for all the replies.
