So its probably more cost effective for me just to get a different block? Will any fuel injected engine work? For instance is the engine from an F150 the same as the one from the Mustang?

Still looking for someone to tell me if my goal of 350-400rwhp is reasonable with the Federal Mogul kit I posted a while back.

As for heads my plan was to get some GT40s and have them ported, that probably wont be good enough for what I want, will it? I dont want to go broke building the engine, but at the same time I dont want to have to do it twice.

If you want 400 rwhp leave the GT40's out of the equation. You don't quite have a grasp on Horsepower just yet. Cast pistons can stand 400 hp. It's just when you throw boost on them or a big Nitrous shot the extra heat damages the piston that and the extra strain of detonation. My advice for the first time builder is buy a book so you can study the engine you want to build and it strenghts and weakness's. There is nothing better for the first timer as to listen to the advice of eperianced engine builders in book form. There is a lot of good advice and some really knowledgeable people giving advice over the internet. There are also those that think they know what they are doing and the only real experiance they have is their next door neighbor built and engine once and he watched part of the build. I've been building engines for 40+years and I still enjoy these books. They can teach you alot and will be a constant sorce of information. Just make sure you get a very current issue. There are still 30 year old editions being sold.

No, all that kit is , is a gasket kit with forged dished pistons, you want flat top pistons if the motor will be N/A if you plan to add boost than the dished pistons will be okay, and any roller cam block from any car or truck equipped with such will be a fine donor, what'll make you achieve your goal is a well selected cam, heads and intake combo, gt-40's are for the budget builder, and in their stock form are not what you really want for power, although I have seen some combos with gt-40 heads run some impressive times, they were however worked over to some degree

Portsmaster: is there a book you would recommend?

mjr46: I wasnt meaning to sound like if I put on the FM rebuild kit that I would magically have 350hp. I was wondering if the pistons would hold up to enough boost to get me in the 350-400rwhp area. My thought was to get some GT40 heads and have them rebuilt and ported. I'm on a budget of about $3000 for the engine plus the cost for tuning. Perhaps I should shoot for 300-350rwhp for now and then upgrade the heads and such down the line a bit when I have more money

you can hit 350-400 rwhp with a stock long block and enough boost, pro50sc is one of the other mods on here and he has a stock long block right down to the rockers and cam with 160k on it and all he has is a few bolt ons and a procharger running 12-14 lbs of boost and he laid down 370 rwhp and runs 11's

So I shouldnt have an issue with the FM pistons and such. It just surprised me how cheap it was compared to the pistons for the 4.0 that were $600 or so. I'm going to see about selling my engine and buying a different block.

I'm thinking this build could make a U-turn...I'm having a hard time selling my engine and the later model 302s selling around here are few and far between, the ones I've found are going for more than I think they're worth too. So I'm thinking doing a 347 stroker and staying N/A might end up costing less since its cheaper to buy an older carbed Fox than a newer fuel injected which would make it so I could buy better heads and such and in the end probably have a better performing vehicle.

Is that going to be a decent kit? Good price? Are there better kits out there for a similar price? I like it because it comes with all the gaskets I need too instead of buying just a rotating assembly and then having to find all the gaskets I'd need.
