Default starter vs solenoid

ok, this is an intermittent problem, and its getting on my nerves. ill go out, start the car, go to town, drive to a couple places, turn the car on/off a few times and then ill come out and it wont start. happened last week, thankfully, i was at a friends house when it happened. i had a friend come over, he tapped the starter a couple times, i tried it and it fired right up. now, normally, at the shops i worked at, that was almost always a starter. but i talked to another friend the other day and he said it could be the solenoid. now, next time, hopefully it happens here at home and i can try shorting the solenoid out with a screwdriver across the studs(his idea). now, if i do that, and it starts immediately, is it a bad solenoid? or a bad starter? or any other ideas would be helpful also. thanks.

The solenoid almost always wears out quicker than the rest of the starter, so replacing the solenoid would probably fix your problem. If your low on cash i would just try that or if it was me I'd just replace the whole thing while your at it.

if you bridge the solonoid and it starts no problem its the solonoid.

just to clairify, when this issue happens, you have no cranking or does it crank and not start?

ok. thanks. i was thinking that it would mean the solenoid, but thought i would check. it doesnt crank. i turn the key and you hear a click like a solenoid makes, but nothing.

I had the same issue with mine once i got my new engine in it. although when it happened it to me it would try to crank but would short before it turned. not sure if you have any other mods, but mine was the starter cause my compressions is higher and stock starter sucked *****.

oh yeah i planned on it. im living off unemployment right now, so i planned on getting a solenoid tomorrow, throwing it on, and go from there but ill probably go ahead and order a new starter anyway this weekend or early next week with my next unemployment check. so, it will ALL be replaced. just a matter of which comes first. haha
