im guessing it is a GT convertible since youre in the 5.0 section...??
headers- less than $200(for shorties anyway. long tubes are normally twice as much)
2.5" h-pipe- @ $400 since youre in Cali and have to pass emissions
2.5" cat-back exhaust- less than $400
if you can put it on, youll still have $200. if not, well, youd better only do two of them because labor would probably kill the rest of the cash.
or you could do gears which cost less than $200 but labor would easily be at least $300 probably. they dont really give you any POWER per say, but it multiplies the torque so you can accelerate faster but wont have as much top speed. you could probably find some used aluminum heads for that, but to really see the advantage of heads youll need a new manifold, and throttle body and injectors and mass air flow sensor all the other supporting mods. if you can put it all on the car, id say do a full exhaust system. itll give you a GREAT sound and probably 20-25hp altogether, if not a little more.

i think it depends if you need to pay for labor or not.... ya might wanna hang on to that 1200 if your not workin, but i know when i was 17 i wouldnt have listened to that advice so if your set on spending it and can do your own work, gt40 heads, cam, and explorer intake... if you can get your labor for cheap you might just be able to pull it off, or just save the money for a little bit beter build down the road.
before you start modding your car make sure your car runs like a champ and doesnt need any parts, tires, ect any time soon, because with no income you could run into a problem shortly down the road and have no money to fix the car

I agree that jumping into mods on a newly acquired car isnt the best idea...
First, how recently has it been inspected? How does it ride? If you do a good bit of highway driving refreshing a 15 year old suspension is sometimes the best thing to do.
Dumping 1000 into the exhaust on a stock block would not be my first choice, but hey its your cash. You can do a few things to get some free power, like removing the air silencer and bumping the timing, but have to run premium if u bump the timing.
