Default Rocker arm movement

My buddy has an '84 with a crate 302, edelbrock performer. we just put on some rebuilt E7TE heads, lifters and pushrods that match the cam, and new 1.6 roller rocker arms. Problem is, everything on, rocker arms torqued down, and we still have up and down movement on the rocker arms. Anyone have any idea what could be causing the excess movement??

There is a proper way to torque down the rockers, i.e. a pattern that they should be tighten in based on the piston positions. That is your problem.

lifters will compress since there is no hydraulic pressure to hold them in a adjusted position, = normal

Prime the oil pump while turning the engine 1/4 turn every few minutes. See if the play goes away. You need to prime the engine before starting anyway.

Use a feeler gauge between the rocker and the valve tip to see how much lash is there (clearance). One question, did you install the rockers with shims? If so try removing/adjusting the shims.

If there are no shims it sounds to me like the pushrods are too short. The lifters should not be collapsed they are new and there is a spring inside that pushs up on the plunger. This is easy to check, can you push down on the plunger?

im guessing thay move alot.....if its an 84 and you put e7te heads on there = wrong heads the head its taller than the e6te heads cause the heads are for a roller cam not a plat tappit cam the roller lifters are longer and since you have flat tappit on there the rocker arms move

..the heads are not the issue, he should be using the push rods that are for a flat tappet cam, if correct push rods are used and play exists , it is a result of bleed down!
