Default flat tappet to roller

My buddy is changing out his cam from a flat tappet to a roller cam, and was wondering what a good one would be. Preferably something with a mild idle, nothin too crazy, and also what lifters and length pushrods to go with, already have 1.6 roller rocker arms and these would be on rebuilt E7TE heads on a 302 crate with an edelbrock performer intake and edelbrock 600 cfm carb.

The only cam that comes up in my head for that is a Comp 270HR retrofit cam. He will have to have retrofit lifters (expensive) adjustable rockers (if the ones he has arnt) and pushrod length can only be determined on the assembled engine you are working on.

My best suggestion is he stick to a flat tappet Hyd cam until he can spring for good heads. The Comp XE262H would be an excellant cam to what he has now. Flat tappet cams can still make exceptional power and are not as fricton robbing as most people think they are. He will need the matching valve springs (not very expensive) to go with the cam. Installing a Retrofit Hyd Roller cam and related parts to work around a set of E7 heads is a total waste of money. The same money he would spend on the cam, lifters, pushrods and spring swap will buy him a decent set of heads.

for the money i costs to retro fit a non roller block with a roller cam correctly done, it'd be cheaper to buy a roller ready block

i retrofitted mine and it was expensive, i only did it because it was a mexican block and i wanted to run a CI roller cam to match my heads. the lifters alone were over $500

^^^^ahhh but see with that block it is worth it, as those blocks are a tad stronger than a factory production run roller block
