Default Tempermental Headlights/Fog Lights

So tonight when I went to put my headlights on, only the parking lights would go on. After a few minutes of flicking the switch back and forth, the headlights finally came on. I figured this might be a fluke, so I drove to my destination without further issue. The only problem is when I wanted to leave, the headlights would not come back on at all, which forced me to drive halfway home with just my parking lights in pitch black conditions. I say halfway because magically the headlights came back on while I was cruising down the road.

Has anyone ever had this issue? Another issue that I'm guessing may be related is that when I have my headlights and fog lights on, my headlights will just randomly shut off while I'm driving. Both scenarios I've described are obviously very unsafe and need to be fixed. Any and all help is appreciated.

Pull your headlight switch off of the dash and look at the wires and wire plug. Sometimes the plug breaks. Mine did. The only other thing is to get a schematic and trace your wires though your whole system.

the fogs over load the system, more than likely the switch is bad(or the multifunction switch (turn signal) autozone carrys a real Ford headlight switch for like 29$ but its packaged and sold as a wells switch :P

leave the fog lights off and see if the prob occurs...if not you have the typical fog light issue per Fords TSB..........you'll need to inspect the wiring all the way back to the fuse box and make sure no wiring has overheated/melted as well as the pin connections going into the fuse box...if all wiring is good, rewire the fog lights using a relay and the T/O wire out of the switch for the fog lights instead of being used as the wire to carry the load you will now use it to trigger the windings/coil on the relay...just did mine this way and works well

It's your turn signal stalk. The wiring for the headlights runs through that. Swap it out and it will fix your problem. I had an 88 GT that did the same thing. I replaced the headlight switch assembly and that didn't fix it. Went out driving a few nights later and after having the headlights on for awhile I started smelling something burning and could see smoking comming out of my steering collum. Swapped out the turn signal stalk and that fixed everything. If I remember correctly the turn signal stalk was easier to replace than the headlight switch assembly was.
