If there's one thing I learned during my 408 build... set yourself a budget, then double it. That's how much it cost me to build this engine. I set myself a $6000 budget, engine ended up costing me closer to 12 grand after all was said and done.
Forged Short Block w/ girdle - 2600
Intake - 700
Heads - 1600
Cam - 375
Injectors - 300
MAF - 550
TB - 350
Pushrods - 140
Rockers - 400
Oil Pump - 120
Valve Covers - 120
Oil Pan - 325
Fuel Rails - 100
Balancer - 275
Flexplate - 200
W/P - 50
ARP Head Studs & Engine Bolt Kit - 150
Anderson Power Pipe - 250
Headers - 700
Exhaust - 750
Fuel System w/ 8AN Braided Line & sumped gas tank - ~800
IAC, TPS, ACT, ECT - ~225
Premium Gasket Set - 175
Let's see what this adds up to... there's probably more that I missed, but that's all I can think of right now... with that right there it's at... $11,135. That's not counting the Anderson PMS to tune the car, FlashACQ & InterACQ which all cost me roughly $1,500. So add that since that's part of the engine, roughly 12,635 into JUST the engine.
Now just for giggles, throw in the converter for $1,000, 4R70W Transmission for $650, Baumann TCS to control my trans for $450, that's $2,100 behind it, now $14,735. Roll Bar for $550, Driveshaft loop $100, now 15,385. Fabbed 9" Rear $2600, now $17,985. Flaming river Rack $550, now $ 18,535... I'm just gonna stop there. I'm going to cry. That's how much I have spent on my car since October of last year... And there's much more yet....
Basically, what I'm trying to say, it's the things you don't think of that add up real quick. When doing your build you really only think of all the big things, rotating assembly, heads, and intake. You usually forget about the simple things like Balancer, injectors, MAF, Flexplate, W/P, Gaskets, Oil Pump, Cam, Valve-train, Fuel system, Exhaust... etc.
What I can say, build it over time, don't cheap out and buy chinese parts, such as typhoon crap. Get the good stuff, the American made stuff, otherwise you're just going to buy it twice.
