Trouble In Paradise
Bought myself a 1991 Lx. 5.0 wit the 3 speed auto 4th gear overdrive trans...everthing goin great..lost overdrive..ok i can work with 3 speeds...wooopps there went 3rd gear..ok..now i'm upset..find a transmission at a local swap meet...pick it up for $125..freshly rebuilt..acid dipped case looked good.. new gaskets.. thought i was good to go..get it home rip the original AOD out of the car...find that the tail shaft housings are diff. lengths..measured the actual tailshaft of the Replacement trans..its about 1/2 to 3/4 longer then the Original..look up the part number RF-E9DP-7006-AA..supposedly outta a town car, crown vic 2wd f150..everythin but a mustang..sooo my question is...would the actual tailshaft being longer bind up the driveshaft if i were to bottom the car out or if i launched it real hard from a stop and the rear end moved..or would i b ok with just swappin the tailshaft housings out and not modifying the driveshaft (having it cut down) to accomodate the longer tail shaft??? any comments or suggestions would b greatly appreciated..

ive read a couple ppl on craigslist selling transmissions out of 5.0 mustangs with the same part number as my Replacement? the vehicles are older tho like 88 and 87..i wonder if the rearends or driveshafts are different on those years..

Rear ends and driveshafts are the same from 79-04, at least for this subject they are all the same. Are you talking about the tail shaft housing being longer? There is a good possibility that it will work with no problems. All I could see happening really is the driveshaft pushing against the output seal more than normal. I would install it and the driveshaft and see if there is any problems when you have it back on the ground.

the actual tailshaft and the tail shaft housing of the transmission is longer and i'm sure to cover the longer shaft..i'm just worried bout bottoming out and pushing the tailshaft into the internal gears of the transmission and wiping out bearings or universal joints breakin..

You should be ok, there is some play in the length of the drivetrain. Remember you can have a c4, aod, aode, and a t5 that all use the same driveshaft. So little differences like that you should be ok. Unless someone chimes in and has def info all you can do is try it and see how much play there is when you have it on the ground before you drive it.
