Piston rings or valve seats? Got an oil eater here.
I got my 91 GT about 3 years ago and its always used more oil than a typical car but never nothing too radical. I'm from Georgia and go to school in Ohio so during the summers I bring it up here to cruise while the weathers nice so its made some long trips since I've had it. I just drove it down to GA for my week of summer break and back up to Ohio and now everytime I go to fill it up.. it needs a quart of oil to go right along with it.
I've never cracked open the motor on this car. I knew it had been beat on by the guy before me so I never bothered and started a 351 project without even considering if it was good or not. The 351 is not near completion enough that I could have it ready to go soon (I'm taking the time and money to put the works in it). Anyways, once I got back to Ohio there was oil residue around the tips of the tailpipes and it smokes when I start it sometimes. My 2 guesses are that 1) the valve seats are worn or 2) the piston rings are shot. I'm just looking for a little bit of knowledge on this subject if anyones had the same ordeal, and I'm sure some have. What say thee, Mustang Forums?

blue smoke on...
Acceleration - rings
engine braking - valve guides
initial start up - valve seals
not the "rules" but a pretty good set of guidelines

yeah so.........when do you think I rebuilt my first 302??? and I can redo a 302 /overhaul one for under 500 beans....last one I did cost 382.00 beans to cut the small ridge on the cylinder wall, hone it , added new bearings and rings and seals on heads and new oil pump and all new gaskets and I sold it to a friend when done and it did not smoke or burn a drop of oil and he used it in his weekly braket racer for 3 years and had 400+ passes on it and it was a 100k grand marquis motor I scuffed and dipped and painted blue and called it new!!
