Default short belt issues....Help?!

Trying to get my stang back after having to take it off the road for a while. Just installed a 3G alternator, im bypassing the smog pump and deleted the AC, installing a new radiator and taurus fan.

I was told to use a 73inch belt, parts store (which is conveniently about 2 hours away) had only a 72.5 and 73.5. I tried the 73.5 and it was to long, same story with the 72.5. Anyone know why i need a shorter belt then usual, with the 72.5 the belts tight but the tensioner sits to low (around 5 o'clock) and pushes the belt into itself (worded weird i know)

Any help and a correct belt size would be appreciated.

Thanks

you are going to have to move your power steering pump up to where your a/c compressor was.

The 3g alternator pulley is different size than stock pulley, for starters. Do NOT change this pulley because you risk damaging the alternator internals and voiding the warranty. I'm sorry to hear your parts store is so far away.... when deleting my smog pump and going to the 3g alternator I had to run back and forth to the parts store 6 different times pinpointing the right belt size.

I'm running my belt routing a different way than in any of those pictures and have no belt to belt clearance issues. Mine is basically run the same as in the picture with the purple belt, however my waterpump and crank routing is the opposite way, similar to the red belt.

I hope you upgraded your alternator to solenoid power wire along with the alternator...

I ran the power off the alternator to the battery, its run through some large gauge wire (idk the gauge, came as a kit) and a 140amp fuse.

You ran the alternator straight to the battery? I don't know how much of a difference it will make, might be significant, but the alternator and battery should both run to the same terminal on the starter solenoid, not to each other.
