Default Is it easy installing a t-5 trans? What needs to be done?

I am about to get my replacement trans for my 1979 Mustang GT engine. It should be here in 4 days. I was thinking of doing it myself. I saw only 4 bolts holding the trans in place to the bellhousing, trans mount and a U-joint. I have never installed a t-5 before. What should I do first? Do I have to align anything prior to install or is it just slide trans into bellhousing and attach 4 bolts and reattach trans mount, linkage and u-joint? Am I missing something? Is there a website where they show or explain how it is done? I tried U Tube but found only how to install an automatic trans. Any help would be greatly appreciated

dont you need to change the flywheel and clutch to 10.5" to work with a T5?

aligning is neccesary everytime you install a trans/clutch

I believe you need a t-5 bellhousing but difficulty is based on your automotive ability and current working knowledge

Are you just replacing the t-5 thats already in your car? If your not doing clutch, then its pretty straight forward.. The hardest part (if working on the ground) would be holding the new trans up so that it slides in and lines up with the clutch disk.

Take shifter handle loose from inside the car.
Drop exhaust & driveshaft.
Take loose all connections/wiring/speedo cable.
Take loose the 4 bolts holding trans to bellhousing.
Put jack under trans to support weight.
Take loose crossmember/trans mount.
Drop down a little and slide jack and trans toward the back of the car until input shaft is out.

P.S: Might want to plug up the tailshaft of tranny once driveshaft is removed cause it'll **** fluid everywhere..

Just reverse the removal steps for re-installation.. There are alot more in depth instructions on the net if you search hard enough.. Just take your time and think about what your doing and it wont be that bad..

It currently has a Borg Warner t-5. The problem I was experiencing was it wouldn't shift into any other gear but 4th. I ordered the same trans.

then it should bolt right up, remove the shifter, and drifeshaft and crossmember and possibly some exhaust stuff if it is in the way and remove speedo cable from trans, back up light connection and 4 bolts and it should pull right out

You'll definitely need to drop the exhaust.

During installation, if you get the trans almost in place, but it is still about a quarter inch from being flush on the bellhousing, press the clutch pedal and it should slide in place. This is a possible roadblock, it baffled my buddy and I for a day or so.

Luckily for me the exhaust won't be a problem. I just want to make sure there isn't something that is required (like aligning something with something) or shifting gear in order for the trans to align itself with the clutch.

If you are not taking your clutch off of the flywheel, just pulling out the trans. Then you just have to rotate your input shaft so your splines line up with the clutch.
